Hélène Vrijdag (b. 1996, Rennes, FR) (she/her) is a Rotterdam-based performer, singer, writer and weaver. She studied Performance at the Toneelacademie in Maastricht and is subsequently pursuing a Master’s in Gender Studies at Utrecht University. She combines freelance musical theatre work with queer, feminist and decolonial academic research.
The voice is the core instrument in her work - the most direct and peaceful weapon. Her performances are genre-bending and gender-bending compositions, inspired by mythology, memes and divas from musical history. With loving disrespect and humorous nods to the musical references that influence our ears, Hélène explores how her high, clear, lyrical voice can be heard without labels.
She creates her autonomous musical theatre work within STUDIO SIBLING, her makers’ duo with Timo Tembuyser (b. 1991, Aalst, BE). STUDIO SIBLING develops vocal performances and a queer voice and listening method for theatre contexts. As a coach, she works from STUDIO SIBLING for Muziektheater Transparant and for MOon Productions.
Additionally, she is part of the eco-feminist artists’ WEEF.collective along with Lieve Fikkers (b. 1998, Rotterdam, NL), in which she makes textile performances and woven installations at locations where slowing down and softening is required.
As a performer, Hélène has worked with Orkater (Suze Milius, Annelinde Bruijs, Marijn de Jong), BOG collectie, Club Gewalt, R3LN4CHT, AntiKlimax and JÓRMA.
