Joke Van de Casteele

Joke Van de Casteele is a costume designer and visual artist who creates worlds in which imagination, craft and performativity converge. Born in Wilrijk (Antwerp, 1977), she obtained a master’s in visual arts, Open Studio option, complemented by studies in theatre costume, pattern making and sculpture. This versatile background feeds a practice that seeks out the interface between sculpture, textiles and performance.

In recent years, she has worked closely with Tutti Fratelli (De Hoop, De Störm, Macadam, Kras je rijk) and with director Tom Goossens (Midsummer Night's Dream). She has also designed costumes for circus companies including Nathan Glaister (BILA), Duo-Nu (IMAGE) and Bert & Fred (8 years – 5 months – 4 weeks – 2 days), and for dance projects by Kristien Maus (Terug naar Start) and Sandman (Un-Retained, Transmute).

Her designs have also appeared at Theater Fabuleus (Wezen), B.E.E.S.T. (Bizarrobos), Theater Luxemburg (Bij de Buren) and Kopergietery (Oscar and Mamie Roos). In film, she has worked in the studio for Iron Sky: The Coming Race and I Kill Giants, among others. As well as commissions, she also develops her own work, including the puppet show Kykna Kolokola, and a visual practice in which she intuitively evokes images and moods.
