Ellen Wils is a mezzo-soprano and creator, driven by a passion for singing, acting, and storytelling. Her musical journey began with pop and jazz; took shape in school musicals during her teenage years; and ultimately found a home in classical singing, where music and narrative seamlessly intertwine. Her curiosity for diverse forms and styles has been a common thread running through her journey. Ellen moves freely between early music, song, cabaret, and contemporary creations, as both a performer and a creator. The less art is confined by genres or disciplines, the more she enjoys working within it.
At the Royal Conservatory of Ghent, she studied classical singing under Mireille Capelle and Christianne Stotijn, while simultaneously finding her place in choirs, theatre companies, and collective creations (ZUIDPARK). During her studies, she performed in Ahimè by Tom Goossens, which was selected for Jong Werk at Theatre aan Zee 2016. Later, she co-created AVANTI! with Sander De Winne and Villa Voortman for VIERNULVIER (TAZ 2019), and sang compositions by Joris Blanckaert in Loopstation by Ontroerend Goed. She then toured for five years with A Revue by Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe for Opera Ballet Vlaanderen and Toneelhuis.
In 2021, Ellen was selected for De Twintigers by Klara, which spotlighted twenty promising musicians. She sang solos in Songs for Tomorrow by LOD music theatre and was part of the tour of LUCY with B.O.X and Dez Mona. Today, she is touring with Aronne by Luciano Berio with HYOID Voices, directed by Joris Lacoste. Additionally, she has collaborated with SPECTRA Ensemble, BachPlus, and the Flemish Radio Choir.
Alongside her artistic practise, Ellen has completed various yoga teacher training courses.
A focus on well-being, connection, and community-building flows through her artistic work and the ways in which she engages in collaborative creation.
