Wim Catrysse (1973) lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium. He gained a Master degree in Visual Arts at Sint-Lukas Brussels University College of Art and Design in 1997. From 1997 to 2000, he followed a post-program course at the Higher Institute for Fine Arts (HISK) in Antwerp, followed by a one-year course at The Glasgow School of Art.

Ever since the late 1990’s, Wim Catrysse has been surveying the dynamics of self-constructed architectural settings or the potentially fictitious characteristics of phenomenal environments, dissecting subjectivity and thereby also the illusion of control. He translates this investigation into single and multi-channel video installations in which both participants and viewers are challenged in a basic, primordial way through the evocation of vertigo. This precondition of boundaries operates to expose the observer to underlying motives. Catrysse’s artistic approach combines intuition with technical reasoning, often leading to complex cinematographic image constructions.

Wim Catrysse had participated in numerous exhibitions, both solo and group shows, at international institutions, including Kunstmuseum Bonn, S.M.A.K. Ghent, Jeu de Paume Paris, MUHKA Antwerp, Center for Contemporary Art Tel Aviv, Nikolaj Kunsthal Copenhagen, Arts Santa Monica Barcelona, Extra City Antwerp and Museum Boijmans van Beuningen Rotterdam.

Wim Catrysse co-founded and collaborates with Escautville, a production platform for video artists.
