The Mezzo-soprano Cristina Zavalloni was born in Bologna in Italy. She already had a substantial jazz background before she studied Bel canto and composition at  the Conservatoire in Bologna. Her versatility enables her to sing both jazz and classical music, and her repertoire ranges from Monteverdi to Mozart. Since 1993, she has worked together with Louis Andriessen, who also composed Racconto dall’Inferno (DG Recording Diapason d’or in 2008) for her. Zavalloni herself also composes, and her most recent works IDEA (2006) and Solidago (2009) were released by the Italian label EGEA.

In 2011 she made her debut at San Francisco’s Other Minds Festival with Louis Andriessen and Monica Germino and at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London in the UK premiere of Louis Andriessen’s Anais Nin.

In that same year she also sang for the first time in a production by Muziektheater Transparant & BL!NDMAN. Utopia :: 47 –a very last passion was a two-part passion that spans many centuries, from 1647, the last year of the Thirty Years War that dragged large parts of Europe into a bloody religious conflict, to 2047, the last year of a future Thirty Years World Conflict that brings human civilization to the edge of the abyss.

In 2012-2013 she made her debut in Beatles! with the Virtuosi Italiani orchestra, went on tour with Brass Gang! and performed in Britten’s Rape of Lucretia and Turn of the Screw on the occasion of the centenary of the composer’s birth. In 2014, she will be back on stage in a production by Muziektheater Transparant and Teatro Comunale di Bologna.
