Michaël Borremans (1963) studied graphics but his real international breakthrough was with his paintings. He was almost 35 years old when he took up the brush. In those early days, his work gave away his background as a graphic draughtsman, but in the following ten years he evolved spectacularly as a painter.
Until 2000, his work was only up in small galleries. That same year, an exhibition at the Society for Contemporary Art drew the attention of many gallery keepers, collectors and the audience.
Michaël Borremans became one of Flanders' most important artists, with acclaim reaching far beyond Belgium's borders. His work toured to Oslo, Stuttgart, Budapest and Helsinki. In the spring of 2014, Bozar in Brussels presents a retrospective exhibition, which will later be travelling to Tokyo and Dallas.
