Since the beginning of the 1980's, Greetje Bijma has been performing as vocal improviser. Her flexible voice and theatrical talent soon caught on outside the jazz circuit. After a successful concert with her former quintet at the international jazz festival in Berlin in 1989, she was invited to many European stages.

In May 2004 she performed at the Lincoln Center in New York. A critic from the New York Times described her as a 'breathtaking theatre personality', praising her vocal talent. She went to New York again in April 2010, performing at Carnegie Hall with pianist Louis Andriessen. In September that same year, she went touring with pianist and composer Michiel Braam. The members of the sextet travelling together were all artists from the Western European improvisation scene. The project is called Autumn Sounds. Bijma often performs solo or in duos with Zoumana Diarra, Klaas Hoek and Jasper van 't Hof.
