Roel Van Berckelaer (1975) studied stage design at the Art Academy in Maastricht and the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona and costume design in Antwerp.
He acquired practical experience working as stage manager at Opera Zuid and later as assistant set designer to Jan Versweyveld at Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, Opéra National de Paris, Teatro Real in Madrid, Opera Vlaanderen and Toneelgroep Amsterdam.
He has worked with directors such as Ivo van Hove, Johan Simons, Pierre Audi, Jim Lucassen and Thibaud Delpeut.
With the latter he worked on the productions Antigone-Kreon-Oidipous (Sophocles), Blasted, 4.48 Psychosis and, more recently, Crave (Sarah Kane), Nacht (adaptation of the Bergman film Shame), Al Mijn Zonen (Arthur Miller), Freule Julie (Strindberg), Medea (Euripides), Nora (Ibsen) and Ajax (Sophocles), Phaedra (Hugo Claus), Stad der Blinden (adaptation of the novel by Saramago) and Een soort Hades (Lars Noren) for Toneelgroep Amsterdam, Schauspielhaus Frankfurt, Theater Utrecht and other companies.
Together with Jim Lucassen he worked on Werther (Massenet) for the Salzburg Opera (Landestheater) and with Guy Joosten on Frühlings Erwachen (Benoit Menier) for the International Opera.
