Sara De Bosschere  (°1972) started in 1994 after graduating from the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp along with fellow students Robby Cleiren, Luc Nuyens and Sofie Sente de Roovers: an Antwerp theatre collective made up of four actors and producers. They never work with a director: every creative process is a joint search for a story that needs to be told at that moment. The actors immerse themselves in spoken-word theatre, bending to their will the classic repertoire of playwrights including Shakespeare, Chekhov and Aeschylus, or set to work with contemporary writers such as Paul Auster and Judith Herzberg. Although they might equally well make children’s theatre or venture into musical theatre. Photographer and stage designer Stef Stessel, who was part of the De Roovers project from the start, undoubtedly contributed to the typical De Roovers style.

She took part in productions including Maria Stuart, A View from the Bridge, All My Sons, Twee Vrienden, Blue Remembered Hills, Uncle Vanya, Oresteia, Timon of Athens and The Iceman Cometh.

Sara De Bosschere has been on the stage since childhood. At nine she made her debut in the professional circuit in what was then the Stadstheater van Antwerpen, playing the youngest daughter in a piece by O’Neill. At the age of sixteen she was invited by director Lucas Vandervost to take part in Voorjaarsontwaken [Frühlings Erwachen].

She also acts with other theatrical companies, including Toneelhuis, maatschappij discordia, De Tijd and Toneelgroep Amsterdam, and has appeared onstage abroad, in Lisbon, Ljubljana, Oslo, Lausanne and Minneapolis.

Directors De Bosschere has worked with include Jan Decorte, Peter Van Kraai, Roy Faudree, Josse De Pauw and Gerardjan Reijnders, and Jan Joris Lamers.

In May 2014 she took part in the production The Civil Wars by Milo Rau, which is still touring and can be seen at many important international festivals. Recently, in Freiburg, The Civil Wars received the jury prize at the German festival Politik im Freientheater.

She has acted in films including Belgica (Felix Van Groeningen), Exit (Boris Paval Conen) and Wasteland (Pieter Van Hees), and in the Emmy-Award-Winning television series Wat als?.

Sara is regularly invited to be a visiting lecturer at the schools of dramatic art in Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent and Maastricht.

Since 2013 she has been part of the Flemish government’s evaluation commission for the performing arts.
