Experience the power of revolution through an inclusive adaptation of an opera classic.

In 1830, during a performance of Daniel Auber’s opera La Muette de Portici at the theatre of La Monnaie in Brussels, riots broke out that led to the Belgian Revolution. In PORTICI, Silence Radio and Muziektheater Transparant translate this historic event into a modern context. The multilingual cast, including deaf actors, dancers, musicians and poets, uses sign language, humour and music to tell the story of a country going through an identity crisis, with the aim of creating connections across barriers.

Based on La Muette de Portici, Daniel Auber (1828).

“It is not the music, but the image that plays the starring role in much-lauded director Tom Goossens’ vision. Dutch, French, gestures, the body, surtitling: no language remains unused, making it accessible to both hearing and deaf audiences. The absurd humour makes it completely Belgian and recognisable.”

Guy Van Vliet, Het Nieuwsblad

“Portici is at its best when the performers calmly and proactively try to speak a language that is not theirs.”

Jens Dewulf, Etcetera
