The Barber
Tom Goossens and Wouter Deltour are adapting one of the most famous operas in history: Il barbiere di Siviglia by Rossini.
Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia is one of the best known operas in history. Among other things, the iconic aria Largo al factotum is world famous. DESCHONECOMPANIE presents this The Barber as a prologue to their adaptation of Le Nozze. The Countess - again interpreted by Ineke Nijssen - and Cherubino (Jef Hellemans) perform the spectacular and grotesque opera as an intimate duet. Together with pianist Wouter Deltour and an opera singer, they go in search of the time when love still provoked an uncompromising struggle.

A cheerful version of Rossini’s masterpiece … The makers’ own imagination takes over here with a highly theatrical interpretation of the opera … musically and textually it is a feast too. Tom Goossens translated the opera into Dutch with a brilliant feeling for music and a wonderful command of language … under his direction there is an infectious performative joy on stage… Another strong point of this performance. Opera lovers and theatre lovers alike will enjoy this.

Theatre can be so cool and sexy … Firstly, the audience hangs on Jef Hellemans’ every word. He performs incomparably well and excels at a comic level ... The actor is helped by Tom Goossens’ text. It seems to be the simplest rhyming and silly humour, but it is a sublime text. The Barber is certainly one of the very best performances of the coming season.

Opera reduced to its comic essence … The codes of opera are turned inside out, and all ballast is thrown overboard. … Only the humorous skeleton of this opera buffa remains … Goossens’ fierce, rhyming text, in which sharp satire and silly wordplay go hand in hand, is its greatest strength … The Barber never loses its balance. Above all this is thanks to Hellemans, who shines in the leading role and turns out to have an exceptional comic talent.

Deltour and Goossens’ winning formula is based on speed and inventiveness. It’s as tightly rhythmic as classical music but with the twinkle of a theatrical farce. Once again there is much tripping up and down of verbal and musical scales; actors Ineke Nijssen and Jef Hellemans and soprano Sawako Kayaki execute this with technical precision, but always playfully.

In De Barbier, notes and words tumble over one another freely, without stumbling, with great humour and beauty. This production from this special company is once again a gem of a spectacular opera in miniature.
