Inspired by the discourse of Peter Sloterdijk en Slavoj Žižek, the director Wouter Van Looy and video artist Wim Catrysse examine the way the global crisis is being handled.

Earth Diver is an initiative from director Wouter Van Looy. A multimedia portrait of breath-taking strength about a society in crisis, desperately seeking for answers. ChorWerk Ruhr sings religious music by Heinrich Schütz, eyes turned upward in a hopeful glance. They move amidst an impressive stage video background where Wim Catrysse drafts a seemingly fictitious portrait of an ice-cold place where miners continue to dig against all odds. At the centre performer and singer Phil Minton reads and sings a haunting poem about loss and detachment.

“Nevertheless, or perhaps precisely for this reason, these intense 75 minutes - which pass in a flash - are by far the best contribution to the music-theatre genre at this year’s Ruhrtriennale.”

Andreas Falentin - Die Deutsche Bühne - 22 September 2016

“The Ruhrtriennale’s ‘Earth diver’ is a multimedia performance of simple means and breathtaking power. … and you get an experience so visceral, so engrossing, that it is almost too much to bear. … Muziektheater Transparant, a team which despite 20 years of success in the business can still make work that looks young, fresh, rebellious and urgent.”

Shirley Apthorp - Financial Times***** - 23 September 2016

“The beautifully performed songs of Heinrich Schütz and the pared-down text by Paul Verrept strike even harder when combined with Wim Catrysse’s harsh film images and Nicolaus Brass’ strange sound landscape.”

Els Van Steenberghe - Knack Focus **** - 14 August 2017

“'Earth Diver’ is of a desolate, chilling beauty, where heavy and earth are interfaced, while offering a terrifying insight in this wonderful phenomenon called Man.”
