Les Âmes Perdues is the graduation project of Isaak Duerinck at the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp.
During the first half of the 20th century, highbrow had never been more popular and lowbrow had never been more elitist. Poulenc wrote a tribute to Piaf, Britten frequented the Berlin cabarets and in the Pfeffermühle one could freely express their soul. Weill and Brecht were inspired by classical symphonies as well as musicals and popular theatre. Socio-political and sensual satire were intoxicated with the scent of eau de Cologne in a call for freedom. Mocking verses as a warning for the impending war, laziness as a mockery of the money-based society and explicit beauty to sever civilisation’s constraints. The only certainty is the uncertainty of what tomorrow will bring. Dansez, dansez!
Music Francis Poulenc, Benjamin Britten, Kurt Weill, Mischa Spoliansky, Friedrich Hollaender, Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, e.a. Text Karl Valentin, Bertolt Brecht, Paul Van Ostaijen and others.
