From the opera scores of Cavalli Nicholas Achten, artistic leader of baroque ensemble Scherzi Musicali, chose a series of arias, duets and laments and instrumental interludes.

With 27 operas the Venetian baroque composer Francesco Cavalli (1602-1676)created a huge and fantastic oeuvre, it sets a particular place in music. He adapted the genre to the needs and signs of the times and helped to make opera a popular entertainment  especially for carnival time. Cavalli's operas were a success not only in Venice, but found an audience through traveling companies throughout Italy. The fame of the 17th-century Italian spread also over Europe and his style was reproduced (amongst others) by Purcell who based his lament on the descending bass line.
