A dark musical quest for the meaning of breathing, in a conservatoire project by Siebe Thijs.

J’ai respiré... J’ai respiré pour... à cause de...
A human being breathes. Sometimes soundlessly, sometimes noisily. Sometimes immensely intimately, sometimes extremely externally.

But what does it mean to breathe today? What does it mean to live today, or to not quite live?

Siebe Thijs (1999) creates an interdisciplinary musical theatre performance based on text by Sony Labou Tansi (1947 – 1995), a Congolese poet who can be considered part of the African avant-garde. Singer Herlinde van de Straete (1999) and musicians from EMC - Extended Music Collective give musical and visual expression to an internal quest for existence, for the human subconscious and its interaction with the outside world. Abstract video footage from visual artist Paulius Šliaupa (1990) and electronic soundscapes interact with the questions posed by the three characters on stage.
