In Змея the Italian theatre maker Luigi De Angelis and Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop stage an evocation of the musical world of Sergei Diaghilev (1872-1929), the founder of Les Ballets Russes.
Together with the adventurous musicians from the Berlin-based Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop and the young singers from TRANSLAB, the Italian theatre maker Luigi De Angelis stages an evocation of the musical world of Sergei Diaghilev (1872-1929), the founder of Les Ballets Russes. Змея (snake) is a performance about ‘the brilliant general of art’, who in his productions linked artists from various disciplines. As a flamboyant charlatan, he had all the components of the ideal patron, except money. Yet he succeeded in seducing the audience and creating a revolutionary aesthetic for music and dance. With the ambiguity of a snake, he injected a new hedonistic and aesthetic sensitivity into the audience’s consciousness. Whirling like a musical vortex, the new production змея will spread through the concert hall and beyond. The audience will be carried away by a capricious and provocative spectacle, which begins as an installation but is gradually transformed into a performance that takes in the whole space – which is exactly the way Diaghilev would have wanted it.
