Tolomeo

Tolomeo, de onttroonde koning van Egypte, vlucht naar Cyprus waar hij anonimiteit en veiligheid zoekt, weg van zijn moeder Cleopatra.

Hij weet niet dat zowel zijn trouwe echtgenote, Seleuce, als zijn broer Alessandro naar hem op zoek zijn. De vermomde Tolomeo wordt ongewild betrokken bij de amoureuze en politieke ambities van de koninklijke broer en zus (Araspe en Elisa) die over het eiland regeren.

De tocht van de totale chaos naar het happy end, test de integriteit, het vertrouwen en de liefde van deze Egyptenaar - maar uiteindelijk krijgt de triomferende Tolomeo zijn troon en zijn Seleuce terug. Tegen een exotische, quasi-historische achtergrond, ontwikkelt zich een menselijk verhaal over wanhopige mensen - verliefd, vermomd, in ballingschap. De pijnlijk eerlijke muzikale beschrijvingen van Händel verklankt een gebroken hart, jaloezie, ambitie, trouw en ware liefde. Vijf mensen worden hier verfijnd geschilderd met hun goede en slechte kanten.

Deze opera, die in première ging in 1728, is de laatste die Händel  schreef voor de Royal Academy. De opera werd in 1730 en 1733 nog hernomen in verschillende versies, afhankelijk van de beschikbaarheid van zangers.  Aria’s uit andere opera’s werden toegevoegd ter vervanging van geschrapte. Het verhaal verwijst  naar de historische Ptolomeus IX Lathyrus, die samen met zijn moeder, Cleopatra III regeerde in 116 v. Chr. Hij werd afgezet ten gunste van zijn broer Ptolomeus X Alexander en rond 106 v. Chr. naar Cyprus verbannen.

"I recall Tolomeo with great fondness and excitement – it was my first production in Europe and to be in Antwerp discovering this beautiful music, the gorgeous singers and the company and the city itself, was delicious yet strange. It’s a feeling I can still remember clearly and will always associate with the music of Tolomeo. My clever colleague Dan Potra had designed a set entirely of paper walls which was gradually torn and slashed and written on and burned. It was a beautiful idea – a fragile membrane between chaos and order - and it looked wonderful under lighting. But it was really hard to work with and extremely noisy and drove me crazy after a few weeks, so I’m sure the singers and conductor hated it. But Tolomeo has some of Handel’s most fantastic arias and scenes, particularly the incredible “stille amare” suicide scene and the rock and roll nihilism of “Son qual rocca”.

It’s an amazingly emotional and bizarre piece, a bit like a dream-landscape and just thinking about it now makes me want to hear it again. Tolomeo is also special because it was the beginning of a very long and joyful friendship with Guy and Luc which has lasted many years, bringing us together in many different cities, countries and situations! I have much to thank Tolomeo for."
