The bankrupt town of Güllen is anticipating a special event. 45 years ago Claire Zachanassian left the town as a poor girl. Now she will return for a short visit as the richest woman in the world. The inhabitants hope that she will save the impoverished town with her fortune. In exchange for the money she demands the death of her childhood love, grocer Alfred Schil. The population is outraged and rejects the proposal. But how long can a person in need withstand the temptations of money and the pressure of the masses? Dürrenmatt paints a ruthless and grim picture of society, of an unstable Europe and the inevitable consequences of a capitalist system.
