Michael Vergauwen attained a Master of the Arts with a major in dramaturgy at the University of Ghent in 2004 and in 2008 he completed his training as an actor at the Herman Teirlinck Institute (Dora van der Groen) in Antwerp.

He performed in plays including Achter Glas and De heilige Antonio with Speelteater/Kopergietery, Ibsen3, Losse draadjes, De Fantasten, nRus and Dracula with De Tijd, Wolfskers with Het Toneelhuis, Trinity Trip with Walpurgis, Schiller/Tasten and Geboeid/Prometheus with Jan Decorte, Oom Wanya, Timon van Athene and België: een sprookje with De Roovers, Een kruimeltje hoop with De Werf, Het Eenzame Westen with Het Eenzame Westen, Drie zusters [Three Sisters] with ’t Arsenaal, Laat op de avond na een korte wandeling, Olga (selected for Het Theaterfestival 2014) and HelloGoodbye with Compagnie De Koe.

Along with Tanya Zabarylo he created and played in Aan Chesil Beach, under the heading ‘Tanya and Vergauwen’. They performed the play a hundred times, at the Zomer van Antwerpen, at the Oerol Festival and on a tour of cultural centres in Flanders.

Vergauwen has made guest appearances in the television series Rupel, Code 37, De Rodenburgs, De zonen van Van As, Aspe, Zuidflank, Zone Stad, Professor T, Cordon and De Regel van 3s. In De Ridder he played a permanent role for four years as Manu Coppens, administrative assistant to Helena De Ridder. In 2017 he was on the sets of De Bende van Jan de Lichte, Unité 42 and Professor T, among others, and also featured in the sketch show Kafka on VTM.

Vergauwen made his onscreen debut as swimming teacher Chris Gommaer in De behandeling van Hans Herbots (2014). In 2015 he played a gossip journalist in Lee & Cindy C, the first feature film by Stany Crets.

He has acted in various short films, including the award-winning Tour de France by Vincent Bal, Rock It by Stephan Duhameau, Prediker by Daan Van Baelen and Dinsdag: une tranche d’immeuble by Niko Himschoot.
