The 33⅓ Collective is a platform for artists, based in Zwolle. It was set up in 2008 by Jules van Hulst, Douwe Dijkstra and Coen Huisman, who got to know each other as students at the art academy. While there, among other things they developed the video projections for the musical-theatre adaptation of The Falls, an early film by Peter Greenaway, who supervised the project himself. After they graduated, this was followed by Bidden Met De Pet Op and Onderbelicht, in which, in a highly unconventional manner, they projected an illusory, often grotesque reality that appealed very much to the imagination, onto everyday objects and ready-mades. This has since been their rather contrary trade mark.

After the successful premiere of Blauwbaard, a video opera, at the 2011 Zwolle Chamber Opera Festival, the Collective were not only highly praised by colleagues, but also by programmers from abroad. After a series of performances at the 2012 Opera Days in Rotterdam, Blauwbaard was on the programme at festivals in Glasgow and New York. It is clear from the reception of the projects initiated and/or co-developed in the 2012-14 period, and performed at such festivals as Into the Wide Open and the Oerol Festival, that the Collective’s original approach remained in the public eye after Blauwbaard too. At the present time, the Collective is working on No More Masterpieces, a concert video in association with the Ensemble contemporain that focuses on the music of Wolfgang Rihm.
