Born in a music-loving family, Lies Wyers (°1989) discovered the world of early music at a very young age. After her cello studies she decided to focus on historically informed performance practice. She studied viola da gamba at the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels with Philippe Pierlot and obtained her Master’s degree with distinction. She also studied baroque cello with Alain Gervreau and chamber music with Barthold Kuijken, Herman Stinders, François Fernandez and others. She refines her playing through masterclasses, notably with Vittorio Ghielmi and Paolo Pandolfo. To further explore the practices of basso continuo performance, she also plays the lirone.
Lies performs solo as well as in different chamber music and consort formations in Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany and France. She is invited to play and record on a regular basis with respected early music ensembles such as Huelgas Ensemble (Paul Van Nevel), Scherzi Musicali (Nicolas Achten), Hathor Consort (Romina Lischka), BachPlus (Bart Naessens) and Per-Sonat (Sabine Lutzenberger). She is a founding member of the ensemble Musae Jovis, with whom she seeks to discover new and refreshing repertoire and interpretations. In 2017, Lies performs solo as well as with different chamber music and consort formations on stages throughout Europe and on festivals such as Festival van Vlaanderen, Tage Alter Musik Regensburg, Alba Nova Alden Biesen, ION Musica Sacra, Midis Minimes, MAfestival Brugge, Laus Polyphoniae, Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht and Bach Festival Lausanne.
In addition to her musical activities, Lies is passionate about language. She studied English Literature and Linguistics at the University of Antwerp, where she graduated in 2015 with the highest distinction for her thesis on the encounter between her two fields of interest: the pronunciation of seventeenth-century English vocal music. Lies loves playing with language and words by writing, rewriting and translating.
