DAY 9 - Nigredo, Albedo Rubedo (2)

When it’s time, Luigi pays close attention in order to be sure that everybody has everything they need on stage:

  • “Headphones?” “Check!”
  • “Microphones?” “Check!”
  • “Seie, your whip?” “My whip is ready to go!”
  • Somebody: “And our phones … to charge our eyes?” “Yes!! Brava!!”

As all lights go out and Luigi and Anne ask “Everybody ready?” at first only one little “yes” resounds from behind the curtain. “Only one?” “YES! yes! YES! Yes!....”So then we start!” SHOWTIME!

DAY 9 - Nigredo, Albedo, Rubedo (1)

When I join the troupe of In Bocca al Lupo again in the theatre studio I notice immediately that there is another kind of energy present: somewhat more tension, another rhythm vibrating in the studio. As I learn shortly after that we ‘re only 10 minutes away from the first real run through – with the costumes, the light, … - all that excitement becomes clear. I see several singers quickly go over their text once again, spelling some words completely out, softly murmuring or singing lyrics for their self in order to hammer every detail into their heads. Others like Sander, still appear to be quite at ease “A little run through, that’s all, nice to have an overview” and are more concerned with guessing what they’ll have for dinner later. Also Maayan looks very happy and as being in his element on the stage.

DAY 7 - Pack of wolves

After a day of rest during the weekend our troupe has started the second week of their adventure. In less than a week, everything should be ready for their big moment. I hear Hanna saying that - at this moment - nobody in the group seems nervous at all, but she wonders if that’ll stay that way, because in less than 5 days…

DAY 5 - Getting the moves right

DAY 5 - Getting the moves right

As I silently enter the top studio, Luigi and Maayan are just getting started on Maayan' s solo ‘Gelosia’ (Luigi Rossi). ‘Gelosia’ describes the torment of a lover who is struggling between love and an irrepressible jealousy that sneaks into his heart like a serpent. Luigi and Maayan search and experiment together in order to find the right bodily expression to go with the singing.

DAY 4 - First run through

DAY 4 - First run through

Although when I arrive in the work-room of Lotte Stek no exciting 'costume adventures’ are going on, spending some time here proves to be quite interesting and funny. As several girls are sitting here as a kind of critical jury waiting for Lottes next clothing-victim, I learn that they have already been practicing a kind of ‘chicken’-‘frog’-… dance and of course some fragments are being demonstrated. Some of the girls are wondering how they ‘ll manage to dance it, if they ‘ll have to perform it in high heels, a (short) dress, … Also there appears to be look-alike for Camille in the making, and the right wig has already been found. As I heard already who ‘ll fit the shoe of Camilles double, I can tell you I can’t wait to see the scene!

DAY 4 - Exploring and exercising

DAY 4 - Exploring and exercising

The warming up today consists of vocal exercises with a strong emphasis on the relation between the voice and the body. As I am not a trained singer at all – and even, as an amateur, tend to avoid all singing – these exercises are at first a bit incomprehensible and quite intriguing for me. Nicolas Achten, the musical director of In Bocca al Lupo introduces an exercise in which everybody has to try to imagine a ping pong ball behind his nose while singing. This ball ‘ll move, become bigger, … as the training continues. This approach will help to express different emotions more profoundly while singing … Caroline Pelon, the singing coach, then explains a breathing exercise which is combined with alternately contracting specific muscles: in one arm, in one leg, in the face, … Based on the reactions of several participants, holding (up) all this tension seems not that easy, especially not in the morning. As they round up, Caroline rewards them for their efforts: “ GOOD! Good! Very good faces!!”  I regret not having a picture to show some truly hilarious faces, but as an privileged witness  I can assure you that was not exaggerated at all!
